INTERVIEW CORNER #27: Dale Eaglesham
Comicdom, Greece, December 28, 2010

There's a rather lengthy intro in Greek, so don't get discouraged -- just scroll down to the interview, which is in English!

UPDATE: We just received an English version of the intro, so here it is. Thanks, Thomas!

How many people have you met who have fulfilled some of their biggest dreams? Very few, I’m sure. And, amongst those you might know, how many firmly believe (and are proven right in time) that the best is yet to come? Personally, I don’t know anyone and I didn’t even believe that this kind of person existed.

Until I read this week’s guest’s bio. Dale Eaglesham has succeeded all these years as an artist (and we’re talking about more than two decades) in fulfilling some of his childhood – and lifelong – dreams. And he still believes that the best is yet to come!

And why shouldn’t he? History has already proven him right. Do you need proof? When little Dale, back in the seventies, was drawing on his notebooks and was saying that one day he would be the artist drawing Conan (I’m only guessing that could be the way it happened), many probably attributed it to childhood excitement. But, when he made it in 1986 and eventually pencilled over ten issues of CONAN for Marvel, his dream came true. Of course, many artists have succeeded in something similar, having their dream come true and relentlessly keeping on doing the job they like.

That’s what happened with Eaglesham too. After his run on THE SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN, he continued working for Marvel, pencilling PUNISHER: YEAR ONE. Some years later (in the early 90s), he crossed over to DC, pencilling comics such as BATMAN: GOTHAM NIGHTS and GREEN LANTERN. As far as the latter is concerned, his work became known even outside the boundaries of the comics community, thanks to a scene from the Hate Crimes storyline (written by Judd Winick), depicting the brutal beating of a gay character. His career continued its upward trend, with Eaglesham pencilling more DC titles, such as H.E.R.O., JSoA and VILLAINS UNITED.

His return to Marvel, in 2009, resulted in another childhood dream coming true. Eaglesham became the penciller of THE FANTASTIC FOUR ongoing series, written by Jonathan Hickman. The Fantastic Four were amongst the artist’s childhood heroes and it seemed like all of his dreams had come true. However, once again, the best was yet to come. After all, there is only one thing that beats working on THE FANTASTIC FOUR – that is, working on THE FANTASTIC FOUR with Stan Lee!

WHAT IF? #200, on sale December 29, features a story starring the Fantastic Four and the question “What if the Watcher decided that Galactus had to die in order to save the Earth?” This featured story is written by Stan “The Man” Lee, co-creator of The Fantastic Four, and pencilled by Dale Eaglesham.

And Eaglesham still believes that “the best is yet to come”! He has already begun pencilling a three-issue storyline for THE INCREDIBLE HULKS (written by Greg Pak) and his future, if we are to consider his past, seems even brighter.

So, read on to learn what this week’s guest, Dale Eaglesham, told us and start betting on what the future holds for him.
